Trump announced his country's withdrawal from the climate agreement and Obama condemns the decision

WASHINGTON, June 2 (UPI) - US President Donald Trump announced the withdrawal of the United States from the Paris climate deal, which he promised during his election campaign under the banner of defending US jobs. "As of today, Thursday, the United States will cease implementing the contents of the Paris Agreement (and will not comply) with the severe financial and economic constraints imposed by the agreement on our country," Trump said. "The agreement is not in the interest of the United States," Trump said in a speech at the White House garden, pointing out that the current agreement was not strong enough with China and India. "I was elected to represent the population of Pittsburgh, not Paris," he said, stressing that he rejected "anything that could stand in our way" to bring down the US economy. "It is time to give Yangstown, Ohio, Detroit, Michigan and Pittsburgh, one of the best places in this country, priority over Paris and France," he said. Trump said the Paris agreement "will have no significant impact" on the climate. Since coming to power, Trump has shown a desire to give momentum to fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas under the slogan of defending US jobs. The agreement, signed by 190 countries at the end of 2015 in the French capital under the auspices of the United Nations, aims to halt global warming by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The US withdrawal from the deal would effectively dismantle 18 months after the historic agreement that Beijing and Washington were under Barack Obama, his chief architect. Former President Barack Obama was the first to reject the president's decision. Obama said in a statement that the agreement would not have come to light in 2015 only thanks to "the US leadership on the world stage," explaining that "the private sector has already chosen a cleaner future. "I think the United States should be at the forefront," Obama said in a statement. "Even in the absence of the US leadership, even if this administration joins a small handful of countries that reject the future, I am confident that our countries, cities and companies will be responsible and will do more to protect our planet for future generations." International reactions to the Trump decision have also been criticized. German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she was "sorry for the president's decision" to continue "the climate policy that is keeping our land." Several German Social Democratic ministers, including the foreign minister, said Trump's decision would "damage" the entire world. European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker on Thursday condemned US President Donald H. Trump's decision to withdraw from the Paris climate deal. "A seriously wrong decision," Juncker wrote in English and German, minutes after Trump announced his decision. The European Commissioner for Climate Action Miguel Arias Canetti said Thursday that the world could "continue to rely on Europe" to lead the fight against global warming after the announcement of the withdrawal of the United States from the Paris agreement. "The Paris agreement will continue," he said in a statement. "The world can continue to count on Europe to lead the world to combat climate change," he said, expressing "deep regret for the unilateral decision of Donald Trump." Finished
