Russia: Bombing of those who try to escape from tenderness

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia's Defense Ministry said on Thursday it was bombing any fighters trying to flee the Syrian city of Raqqa, saying it had carried out two bombardments over the past week.
The US-led coalition supports a coalition of Kurdish and Arab armed groups in its campaign to regain control of Raqqa, a stronghold of Syria.
But the Russian Defense Ministry said on Thursday that Syria's democratic forces, including the militia of the Kurdish People's Protection Units, had halted their military campaign towards Raqqa, leaving holes in the southern end of the city used by armed militants trying to leave al-Raqqa and regrouping south of the city.
Russian fighter jets destroyed a convoy of gunmen heading from Raqqa to Palmyra on May 25 and bombed three similar convoys late on May 29 and on the first day of May 30, the ministry said.
"Da'ash's losses include more than 80 terrorists, 36 vehicles, eight fuel trucks and 17 pickup trucks equipped with mortars and machine guns," the ministry said in a statement.
The Russian air force in Syria has the firepower and the means to effectively eliminate terrorists at any time of the day or night, "the ministry said.
Russia also resorted this week to its freedom to strike land targets. It said on Wednesday that a Russian warship and submarine fired four cruise missiles from the Mediterranean on targets close to Palmyra.
