At least 29 migrants have been killed and 22 others, mostly teenagers, missing in the Arabian Sea after their smugglers forced them to jump in waters off Yemen, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said.

"A smuggler forced more than 120 Somali and Ethiopian migrants to jump into the sea as they approached the coast of the Yemeni province of Shabwa in the Arabian Sea," the organization said in a statement quoting survivors seen by Sky Press.

The bodies of 29 migrants on the beach sands in Shabwa province were found after survivors buried them, and estimated the average age of the migrants on the boat was about 16 years.

"The smugglers deliberately pushed the migrants into the sea for fear that the authorities would arrest them when they reached the beach," an FAO emergency official in Aden said.

"They simply returned from where they came to load more migrants and try to smuggle them into Yemen," he said, referring to the presence of "many women and children among the drowned or missing."

The organization notes that some 55,000 migrants have arrived in Yemen from the Horn of Africa since the beginning of this year, most of them hoping to find jobs in the Persian Gulf.

The sea voyage is dangerous at this time of the year due to strong winds in the Indian Ocean
