Trump defying Mexico: You will pay the price of the border wall .. And so I replied

    28/08/2017

US President Donald Trump on Sunday called on Congress to find a way to cover the cost of the border wall he promised to build on the border with Mexico, saying that the bill would be paid in one way or another by Mexico, which quickly responded by saying "no".

Trump also warned Mexico and Canada that if they continue to adopt a "tough" position on trade talks, he will have to stop negotiations to amend the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

These two positions put Trump on the path of confrontation with many skeptical US congressmen, as well as with a number of neighboring countries, but they gain popularity with his constituency.
"Mexico is one of the highest crime countries in the world," Trump wrote on Twitter, "We must build this wall, Mexico will pay the cost of building it through compensation or other."
"We are in the process of renegotiating the NAFTA (the worst trade agreement in history) with Mexico and Canada, and the countries are taking a difficult position," he said.
In Mexico, the Mexican Foreign Ministry responded to Trump's statement by saying that "the Mexican government has always stressed that our country will not pay in any way and under any circumstances the price of building a wall."
"This position does not fall within the framework of a negotiating strategy for Mexico, but a principle of sovereignty and national dignity," the ministry said in a statement.
Trump's position on the wall and trade is well-known, forming the centerpiece of his campaign to win the presidency last year, but they may now contradict the political reality.
Members of Congress return from their summer vacation on September 5 and have to agree to finance the government and raise the federal debt ceiling.
The Republican majority wants to cut taxes and pass a costly infrastructure bill, but Trump has threatened to stop the government if Congress does not fund the wall.
Democrats, however, are opposed to including the wall in the government spending bill, and Republican leaders will try to pass the law while opposing the government's suspension.
The United States, Mexico and Canada began renegotiating the 23-year-old NAFTA agreement earlier this month at Trump's invitation.
The US president has repeatedly called the deal "catastrophic" because it exports US jobs to Mexico, while Mexico has said it is a negotiating style that has the satisfaction of the US grassroots.
Mexico, which sells 80% of its US exports, does not want radical changes to the agreement, and Canada is concerned. sf
