In figures ... This is what Hajj brings to the Saudi treasury every year

    Release date: 2017/9/2

With Saudi Arabia witnessing a decline in oil revenues due to lower prices, Hajj is one of the most important alternative revenues for oil because it generates billions of dollars on the budget.
The number of pilgrims this year was 2.350 million pilgrims, including 1.750 million pilgrims from 168 nationalities who came from outside the Kingdom.
Every pilgrim spends several thousand dollars on housing, nutrition and gifts, except for air transport expenses.
"The expenses of pilgrims from home and abroad during this year could reach 20-26 billion Saudi riyals (5.33 billion dollars) to 6.67 billion dollars compared to 14 billion riyals ($ 3.73 billion) last year," said Maher Jamal, head of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Mecca.
Jamal attributed the increase to "the number of pilgrims increased by 20% this year compared to last year."
"Until the discovery of oil, Hajj was the first source of Saudi income," said historian Luke Schanter, a pilgrim who specializes in pilgrimage during the colonial era.

"Even before Islam, Mecca was a commercial site and was a place for international trade where the religious and commercial sides were constantly mixed."
