US President Donald Trump has abandoned a century-old US law that has limited shipments between American ports on American flag vessels, the White House said Thursday.
Which allows for an accelerated delivery of relief supplies to cyclone-ravaged Puerto Rico.
Without this move, the so-called 1920 Jones Act would reduce the number of ships available to deliver relief supplies to hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico in the Caribbean, where Hurricane Erema and María caused catastrophic damage this month.
"Trump has authorized the suspension of the Jones Act for Puerto Rico, and it will happen immediately," White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said on Twitter.
"This was done at the request of Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rosello," she said.
Trump is due to visit the island on Tuesday as the US Coast Guard and the US Navy are already leading relief efforts as power and water systems have been severely damaged after hurricane Maria, who struck the island's land on September 20 with winds approaching a fifth-rate hurricane scale. is over
