A senior CIA expert on Wednesday described North Korean leader Kim Young-un as a "rational" politician and said the United States should learn how to deal with the isolationist state, which has a nuclear weapon.
"Not to mention the threat and intimidation, Kim Yong-un is rational," said Young Sook-Lee, deputy assistant director of the Korea Mission Center of the CIA.
"We have a tendency in this country to downplay his reservation," he said at a CIA conference at George Washington University that Kim was "trying to rule for a long time and die in his bed."
US officials, including President Donald Trump, have repeatedly portrayed Kim as a "crazy" and far-fetched person.
But Li stressed that the North Korean leader's focus was on staying in power, as reflected in the assassination of his half-brother Kim Yong-nam in Malaysia in February, which Pyongyang's agents accused of carrying out.
He stressed that "all his political positions to serve internal goals," for the North Korean side.
The country has a long history of living in an environment of great powers, which means that it always takes a defensive stance, which is what its leaders focus on.
Lee said North Korea was "a political entity living on confrontation."
But Kim's fierce defense of his attitude and hostile approach to Washington does not mean he will act irrationally because he now has the capability to launch a nuclear-armed missile against the United States.
"Any decision to strike Los Angeles, for example, with a nuclear weapon is not in the interest of continuing his rule," Lee said. C
