    [ltr]Officials from Niger and the United States have confirmed the deaths of five soldiers from Niger and three US special forces in an ambush on a joint patrol in southwestern Niger.[/ltr]
    [ltr]A US official told Reuters that five US soldiers were attacked during a routine patrol in an area known to have fighters, including al-Qaeda militants in the Islamic Maghreb and the organization "Da'ash" terrorist.[/ltr]
    [ltr]He added that it was not yet clear who shot US soldiers and US-backed forces.[/ltr]
    [ltr]A spokesman for the US command in Africa confirmed the attack after Radio France International reported a deadly attack near the border between Niger and Mali.[/ltr]
    [ltr]"We can confirm the reports of a joint patrol of Nigerian and American soldiers against hostile fire in southwestern Niger," the spokesman said.[/ltr]
    [ltr]Namatha Abu Bakr, a local official in the Tilabiri district, said five soldiers from Niger were among those killed.[/ltr]
    [ltr]A diplomatic source in Niger said the attackers had come from Mali and killed several soldiers.[/ltr]
