US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Iraq should stand up to Iranian influence, recognizing that the two countries share long borders and legitimate economic interests.
Tillerson's comments came in response to journalists' questions in Geneva yesterday about countering Iranian influence. "What we say to the Iraqis is that you have to develop the ability to rely on yourselves," he said.
"Iraqis are Arabs, not Arabs, whether they are Sunnis or Shiites. I think the Saudis are willing to resume their relations with the (Iraqis)," he said, adding that Iraq is not working to abolish all relations between Iraq and Iran. Who are associated with them with old tribal brothers. "
On the tension between the Iraqi forces and the Peshmerga, Tillerson expressed his country's "utmost concern" about the fighting that broke out between the Iraqi security forces and Kurdish Peshmerga forces after a referendum on independence, "The tension that erupted in northern Iraq last month is worrying, America is friendly to Iraq and the region "He said.
The minister added that Washington "is disappointed by the inability of the parties to reach a completely peaceful solution."
The minister also stressed his country's understanding of the imposition of federal authority in the province of Kirkuk and other areas.
