Saudi Ambassador to Iraq Abdul Aziz al-Shammari said his country would resume consular services through its embassy in Baghdad over the next three months.

Al-Shammari said in a press statement that the Saudi consulate will begin granting visas to Iraqis wishing to visit the Kingdom to perform Hajj or Umrah or other visits.

He said the measure was aimed at speeding up Iraqis' entry visas to Saudi Arabia after they had to obtain them from Saudi consulates in neighboring countries.

The relations between Baghdad and Riyadh have improved significantly in recent times. The two sides agreed in October to open border ports and develop ports, roads and border areas and increase economic cooperation.

Saudi Arabia officially reopened its embassy in Iraq in December 2015, nearly 25 years after its invasion of Kuwait in 1990.
