US Defense Secretary Jim Matisse said on Tuesday that the United States was seeing signs of Taliban interest in discussing possible talks to end the 16-year-old war.
"There is an interest we have noticed from the Taliban," he said.
Matisse stressed that some of these signs, which he did not mention in detail, date back to the pre-Abdul Ghani remarks.
"We have some groups of Taliban - small groups - either have begun to change their position or have expressed interest in the talks," they said.
Afghan President Ashraf Abdul Ghani offered last month to hold talks without preconditions with Taliban militants, in what US officials said was a major offer by Kabul.
