The yen hit a 16-month high against the dollar on Friday, while the lira fell to a record low as growing global trade tensions triggered a wave of investor anxiety.
The yen gained as Japanese private investors liquidated positions held in high yielding currencies such as the Turkish lira against the Japanese currency.
The dollar fell to 104.635 yen in early Asian trade on Friday, the lowest level since November 2016. The dollar fell 0.5 percent to 104.80 yen.
The Turkish lira fell more than 3 percent against the yen in early trade on Friday. In the latest trading, it fell 1.2 percent to 26.42 yen.
Against the dollar, the pound fell to a record high of 4.0375 against the dollar. After cutting some of its losses, the lira recorded the most recent trading at 3.965 against the dollar to remain around 0.8 percent lower during the session.
The yen's overall rise came as financial markets were shaken by concerns over growing US-China trade tensions.
US President Donald Trump signed a presidential memo on Thursday aimed at imposing customs duties on Chinese products worth up to $ 60 billion, but this will happen after a 30-day consultation period that will begin once the list of goods is published.
The euro also fell against the yen, reaching a low of 128.96 yen, the lowest level of the single European currency since August 2017. After the euro cut its losses fell 0.2 percent against the yen to 129.31 yen.
