US crude inventories rose last week as refinery production increased, while gasoline stocks and distillates fell, data from the US Petroleum Institute showed.
Crude stocks rose 5.3 million barrels in the week ending March 23 to 430.6 million barrels, compared with analysts' forecasts of a 287,000 bpd decline.
Crude inventories at the futures delivery center in Cushing, Oklahoma, rose by 1.7 million barrels, the institute said.
The institute's data showed that the average consumption of refineries of crude rose by 310 thousand barrels per day.
Gasoline inventories fell 5.8 million barrels, compared with analysts' forecasts in a Reuters poll of 2 million barrels.
Data showed distillate stocks, including diesel and heating oil, fell by 2.2 million barrels, compared to a 1.6 million barrel forecast.
