A US judge has rejected Saudi Arabia's request to drop claims in the United States that accuse the kingdom of helping to plot the September 11, 2001 attacks and demanding compensation for the victims.
Judge George Daniels of the US District Court in Manhattan said on Wednesday that the allegations of the plaintiffs "provide a reasonable basis" for him to assert jurisdiction in the proceedings of the Justice Act against the sponsors of terrorism of 2016.
The Saudi government has denied involvement in the attacks, which killed nearly 3,000 people.
Asked whether the court's decision would negatively affect Saudi investment in the United States, Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency (CMA) chairman Mohamed al-Quwaiz was asked at a ceremony on the Saudi stock market in New York but declined to comment, saying he had not seen the news.
Daniels' decision includes suits filed against Saudi families of the dead and about 25,000 injured and a number of commercial companies and insurance companies.
In two decisions, Daniels also rejected the complainants' claims against other defendants on grounds of lack of jurisdiction.
Among these defendants are two Saudi banks, the National Commercial Bank, Al Rajhi Bank and the Saudi Bin Laden Group, a construction company controlled by the bin Laden family of former al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.
Prosecutors accused those institutions of providing material support to al Qaeda or Osama bin Laden in the form of financing and financial services to carry out the attacks.
Saudi Arabia has enjoyed wide immunity from the lawsuits for the September attacks in the United States, but that changed when Congress passed in September 2016 the right veto [veto] enjoyed by then President Barack Obama and passed a law to allow the continuation of these issues.
