DAMASCUS (Reuters) - US-led coalition forces have carried out a fourth landing in the province of Hasakah, northeast of Syria, where one of the leaders of a militant organization was arrested, Syrian activists said.
Activists in the social networking sites said that "the air raid was carried out at dawn on Thursday near the town of Al-Hol at the Syrian-Iraqi border in the south-eastern Hasaka countryside," adding that "the official Al-Da'ashi had been infiltrated into Syrian territory from Iraq."
"The operation was aimed at the arrest of the leader of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, and confirmed the sound of heavy gunfire in the region," the official news agency IRNA quoted local sources as saying.
The network sources confirmed that "the coalition forces arrested" prominent figure "in the organization, adding that it was not yet confirmed whether the coalition arrested al-Baghdadi or managed to escape.
This came two weeks after Fox News reported that Iraqi intelligence uncovered the al-Baghdadi hideout in the Syrian province of Deir al-Zour, near the Iraqi border. The official later denied the authenticity of the statements. Attributed to him[/ltr]
