US President Donald Trump said North Korea's nuclear arsenal was "an extraordinary and extraordinary threat" despite his historic meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

After the Singapore summit, which he gathered with Kim on June 12, Trump said upon his return to Washington that "there is no longer a nuclear threat from North Korea."

But a presidential statement sent to Congress on Friday came in a very different tone and explained why Washington would keep tough economic sanctions on Pyongyang.

"The risk of the proliferation of fissile material for military purposes on the Korean Peninsula and the actions and policies of the North Korean government continues to pose an exceptional and extraordinary threat to national security, foreign policy and the US economy," Trump wrote in the statement.
