The Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Friday that Thursday's telephone conversation between Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump was very positive.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said during a daily press briefing that the two leaders believed that they should strengthen trade ties.
Xi said he and US President Donald Trump expressed hope of expanding bilateral cooperation in trade.
"The trade teams of the two countries should strengthen contacts, hold consultations on issues of mutual concern and develop a plan that both sides can accept to reach consensus on the China-US trade issue," Shi said.
The Chinese president was also quoted as saying he was ready to meet with Trump in Argentina during the G20 summit.
Shi's comments came after Trump said discussions on trade with China were "moving forward well" and that he planned to meet Shi at the upcoming G20 summit.
China and the United States are locked in a bitter trade war, and both countries have already imposed customs duties on imports from the other country.
