The dollar jumped against the euro and the sterling on Wednesday as the new year started on a strong performance, but fell against safe-haven yen as investors continued to warn of slowing global growth and volatile stock markets.
The euro fell 1.1 percent on thin manufacturing data from Spain, France, Italy and Germany, making it the worst daily performance against the US dollar in more than six months, Reuters said.
Sterling fell 1.2 percent, reversing gains gained earlier in the week, as factory surveys failed to dispel fears over Britain's secession negotiations.
The dollar fell 0.36 percent against the yen, which tends to gain during periods of geopolitical or financial tensions
