The US Democratic Representative, Tulsi Gabard, announced on Saturday that she will formally nominate her in the presidential election next year.
The 37-year-old has been involved in the Iraq war and her relationship with the party is volatile and will join the list of liberal Democrats seeking the party's nomination.
Gabard will officially launch her campaign from Hawaii, which she has represented in Congress since 2013. A US-born Gabbard is of Samoa, the first Hindu woman to be elected to Congress.
Gabbard faces stiff competition with other party candidates pursuing similar policies, such as Senators Camala Harris and Elizabeth Warren.
Polls have so far shown little support for Gbagard, and there are signs of problems in her nascent campaign, such as the resignation of the campaign manager after weeks of wrangling.
In Iraq and Kuwait, she served with a field medical unit of the National Guard of Hawaii, an experience that fueled her foreign policy views on nonintervention in other countries.
It has also consistently opposed US intervention in Syria and the overthrow of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad from power.
