According to the statement, "King Salman affirmed the support of Saudi Arabia for Iraq and its keenness on its security, stability and prosperity, and renewed support for the steps taken by the Iraqi government and its directions in the reconstruction of Iraq."

The Prime Minister expressed "great thanks and gratitude for the support shown by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to Iraq and its pride in the level reached by the relations between the two countries and the two brotherly peoples and his aspiration for further economic, commercial and oil cooperation and building partnership relations that serve the two peoples and the region and enhance its security and stability."

According to observers, Saudi Arabia is seeking to attract Iraq as part of joint efforts with the United States to stop what it calls "Iranian regional influence", while Baghdad seeks to achieve economic benefits from closer ties with Riyadh.

In October 2017, two months before Iraq declared victory over the "Da'ash," the two neighboring countries established the Joint Coordination Council between Iraq and Saudi Arabia to help rebuild the devastated areas recovered by Iraqi forces from the militants of a terrorist organization.
