The office of resigned Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi said on Wednesday that his office manager "does not have any legal powers to take possession of any plot of land," in response to a report published by the "Al-Hurra" website, regarding the granting of vast land to the Hezbollah militia militia inside the Green Zone.
Abdul-Mahdi's office stated, in a statement, which the Al-Hurra website obtained a copy of, that the Iraqi government "has never taken such a step inside the Green Zone for any party."
The statement added that "the director of the Prime Minister's Office does not have any legal powers that would authorize him to own any piece of land, whether for investment or for any other purpose, anywhere in the green zone or outside it."
A high-ranking Iraqi security source revealed to Al-Hurra that Abd al-Mahdi’s office was granting vast lands to the Hezbollah Brigades militia, in strategic locations inside the Green Zone in central Baghdad.
"The lands are real estate belonging to the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers granted to the militia loyal to Iran, according to the principle of flattening and investing in contracts and multiple attributes," said the source, who asked to be identified,
The investments included, according to the source, "the establishment of sites for security companies, stores, parks, homes and logistical services sites for housing within the Green Zone, such as building a restaurant or shopping center."
The source indicates that the purpose of this step is to ensure a permanent presence of the militia, which the United States classifies as terrorist, inside the Green Zone in the event that the American embassy in Baghdad resumes its activity.
"They will have intelligence stations that guarantee their presence and entry into the green and spying on the United States, embassies and diplomatic missions," he added.
The Iraqi source confirms that "the work of the Hezbollah Brigades is different from the other militias loyal to Tehran, as they are an Iranian international mafia whose mission is to track and spy on Western activities in Iraq."
The source also reveals that the Kataeb Allah militia has seized important places in the Green Zone, including the homes of former regime officials, by signing rental or purchase contracts and registering them in the names of people associated with the militia.
He concludes by saying that "the presence of Hezbollah brigades members began to expand in the Green Zone further after the American embassy stopped work and cut the number of its employees, and militia leader Abu Muntazer al-Husayni assumed responsibility for the security of the fortified area in central Baghdad."
The land donated to the Hezbollah militia militia enjoys a distinctive strategic location, as it is close to the guesthouse of the Iraqi Prime Minister, and mediates between it and the headquarters of the United States Embassy in Baghdad.
A prominent researcher at the Washington Institute for Near East Studies, Michael Knights, commented on the news, by noting that about 200 Hezbollah personnel had taken over empty land and started building tents and temporary headquarters.
Knights, in a series of tweets on Twitter, described the move as dangerous and very disturbing, given that the land seized by the pro-Iranian militia is located at a vital crossroads in the center of power in Baghdad.
