Informed sources said that a Chinese report warns that Beijing is facing "a growing wave of hostility", in the wake of the outbreak of the Corona virus, which could turn its relations with the United States into a confrontation.
The sources said that the report submitted by the Ministry of State Security early last month to senior leaders in Beijing, including President Xi Jinping, concluded that global anti-China sentiments reached their highest levels since the 1989 Tiananmen Square campaign.
People familiar with the report, who refused to reveal their identities due to the sensitivity of the issue, said that, as a result, Beijing is facing a wave of hostile feelings led by the United States in the aftermath of the epidemic and needs to prepare for an armed confrontation between the two world powers in the "worst scenario".
The report was prepared by the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations, an think tank under the Ministry of State Security, the largest intelligence service in China.
Relations between China and the United States are widely regarded as being at their worst stage in decades, with growing distrust and friction points caused by US allegations of unfair trade and technological practices to disputes over Hong Kong and Taiwan and the disputed territories of the South China Sea.
US President Donald Trump, who faces a tough campaign for re-election after the Corona virus has killed tens of thousands of Americans and destroyed the US economy, has intensified his criticism of Beijing in recent days, and has threatened to impose new tariffs on China.
Meanwhile, officials said his administration was considering retaliatory measures against China over the outbreak.
The report, described to Reuters, warned that anti-China sentiments, triggered by the Corona virus, could fuel resistance to Chinese belt and road infrastructure investment projects, and that Washington may intensify financial and military support for regional allies, making the security situation in Asia more volatile.
In the wake of the Tiananmen Square events 30 years ago, the United States and many Western governments imposed sanctions on China that included a ban or restriction of arms sales and technology transfer.
A person familiar with the report said that some in the Chinese intelligence services considered it a Chinese version of the "Novikov Telegraph", a telegram sent by the Soviet ambassador to Washington in 1946, Nikolai Novikov, stresses the dangers of American economic and military ambition, in the aftermath of World War II.
Novikov's message was in response to a telegram to US diplomat Georginan from Moscow saying that the Soviet Union does not see the possibility of peaceful coexistence with the West, and that containment is the best strategy in the long run.
The two documents helped pave the way for the strategic thinking that defined both sides of the Cold War.
The United States has accused China of hiding early information about the virus, which was first discovered in Wuhan, and of reducing its risks. 25 h has ended
