    Economy News - Baghdad
The Minister of Culture, Tourism and Antiquities, Hassan Nazim, revealed that the Ministry of Finance had paid the salaries of employees of the Tourism Authority during the previous years.
Nazem said in an interview with state television, which was followed by Al-Iktissad News, that Iraq, as part of its plan to get rid of the proceeds of its oil-dependent economy, must have a Ministry of Tourism.
He emphasized that "there should be an exceptional interest in tourism, and there must be a Ministry of Tourism," adding, "But what happened happened, and the Tourism Authority was merged with the Ministry of Culture and stumbled a lot in its administrations."
He pointed out that "the files of corruption in the Tourism Authority contributed to the failure to pay the salaries of the Authority’s employees," noting that "the Ministry of Finance paid salaries during previous years as financial grants to the authority."
Regarding the ministry’s payment of salaries, Nazim said: “It is strange that the authority owns all these first-class hotels and tourist islands, which generate huge sums of money, but it cannot pay the salaries of its employees.”
He emphasized that "the mistakes that occurred in the Tourism Authority were addressed, and the previous administration was held accountable and referred to integrity and self-pay the salaries of the employees during the past few months."
