Lebanese Central Bank Governor Riad Salameh is being criticized for his monetary policies
On Friday, a spokesman for the US State Department denied the validity of news alleging that Washington intends to impose sanctions on the governor of the Central Bank of Lebanon, Riad Salameh.
The foreign ministry spokesman told Al-Hurra that "the reports about possible sanctions against the governor of the Central Bank of Lebanon, Riad Salameh, are incorrect."
The denial comes after the newspaper "Bloomberg", citing sources, said that the Biden administration is studying the possibility of taking coordinated measures with European counterparts targeting Salameh, who has held his position for 28 years.
The Federal Public Prosecutor's Office in Switzerland announced last January that it had requested legal assistance from the Lebanese authorities regarding "an investigation into money laundering ... in connection with possible embezzlement of funds from the Bank of Lebanon," which Salameh heads.
The Swiss request referred to transfers worth 400 million dollars, belonging to Salama, his brother, his assistant, and institutions affiliated with the Central Bank, including the Middle East Airlines and Casino du Liban. Salameh denies the existence of any corruption in his dealings.
Political parties in Lebanon hold Salameh responsible for the collapse of the national currency. And sharply criticize the monetary policies it adopted over the past years, as it accumulated debt. However, Salameh has repeatedly defended himself by asserting that the Central Bank "funded the state but did not disburse the money."
