the National Central Federation of Trade Unions in Iraq, on Sunday, identified the reasons for the increase in the unemployment rate in the country, while confirming that some companies violate labor laws by introducing foreign workers.
Union President Yusra Al-Hashemi said, according to the official agency, that "the reason for the high unemployment rate in Iraq is the large number of foreign workers, their illegal entry into the private sector, and the lack of the private sector, pointing out that there are companies that violate labor laws that impose 50% of Iraqi workers and 50% of foreign workers." ".
Al-Hashemi added that "violations of the law have been detected, as there are projects with 2000 workers and sometimes 3000 workers against 500 Iraqi workers, especially in projects in the southern region, such as Basra refineries, security companies and others."
She stressed "the need to revitalize the private sector and activate the agricultural and industrial sectors to absorb the unemployed," stressing that "there is a phenomenon of layoffs not only in Iraq, but even in the world due to the Corona pandemic."
She pointed out that "there are approximately 10 unions of workers in Iraq, which made this plurality distinguish between unions and other unions, and also led to many splits," indicating that "labor unions help facilitate the requirements of investors in order to encourage them to invest in the national industry or the private sector."
