Yesterday, Tuesday, the Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee confirmed that it will host the Joint Operations Command to take a position on the incursion of Turkish forces into Iraqi lands. Committee member Kata Al-Rikabi said, "The Turkish forces have been present in Iraqi territories for more than 25 years and have 19 military bases in northern Iraq.
"During the last three years, Turkish forces penetrated into Iraqi territory with a depth of more than 25 km," he added, pointing out that "the visit of Turkish military officials to their forces on Iraqi lands is considered an infringement of Iraqi sovereignty."
Al-Rikabi continued, "The Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee discussed more than once the Turkish incursion into Iraqi lands, but the government did not have a serious stance towards this incursion."
And that "the Parliamentary Defense Committee decided to host the vice president of joint operations after the Eid holiday in order to find out the details of the situation in the Kurdistan region and northern Iraq and take a stance towards the Turkish incursion into the country."
The Turkish Interior Minister, Suleiman Soylu, had announced his country's intention to establish a military base inside Iraqi lands, and claimed that this would come to control the situation near the borders between the two countries.
Soylu said, according to Turkish media, that "the army recently launched a new military operation inside Iraqi territory."
He added, "The area near the Qandil Mountains in Iraq is one of the most important strongholds of the PKK."
Soylu pointed out, "Our operations will continue, and we will work to establish a military base inside Iraqi territory, similar to what we did in Syria to control the borders."
On April 23, the Turkish Ministry of Defense announced the launch of the “Lightning Claw” and “Thunderbolt Claw” operations, to pursue PKK militants inside Iraqi territory.
