The US State Department welcomes the statement of the Security Council and congratulates the success of the Iraqi elections
Shafaq News/ On Tuesday, the US State Department welcomed the statement issued by the Security Council on the Iraqi elections, congratulating the "success" of these elections, while urging all parties to respect the rule of law.
Today, the office of the official spokesman at the US State Department, Ned Price, issued a statement on the Iraqi elections, which was received by Shafak News Agency, in which he said, "The United States of America welcomes the statement issued by the UN Security Council regarding the Iraqi elections on the tenth of November."
"We congratulate the people and government of Iraq on a safe, technically sound and largely peaceful election process," the statement added.
He pointed out that "the Iraqi elections were an opportunity for Iraqi voters to decide their future through a government that reflects their will."
"We join the international community in condemning the threats of violence against the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) and Iraqis, and urge all parties to respect the rule of law and the integrity of election procedures," the State Department statement continued.
And he stated that "the United States of America looks forward to working with the new Iraqi government as it is formed to strengthen our strategic partnership regarding our multiple common interests, including Iraq's stability and sovereignty, economic empowerment, anti-corruption efforts, energy independence, climate, and protection of human rights."
The UN Security Council issued a statement (Friday, October 22), regarding the success of the early elections in Iraq, and expressed its congratulations to the Iraqi people and the Iraqi government on the occasion of the recent elections that were held on the tenth of October.
The members of the Security Council welcomed the initial reports that the early elections went smoothly and were distinguished from all the elections that preceded them by important technical and procedural reforms.
The members of the Security Council commended the Independent High Electoral Commission for conducting technically sound elections, and also commended the Government of Iraq for its preparations for the elections and for preventing violence on Election Day.
Hundreds of supporters of the Popular Mobilization Forces, an alliance that includes pro-Iranian factions, began a sit-in near the Green Zone in the center of the capital, Baghdad, to protest against the "rigging" they say marred the early legislative elections.
The Electoral Commission announced its review that it will start the manual counting and sorting in the centers whose results have been challenged.
