    Baghdad - people
On Sunday, Finance Minister Ali Abdel Amir Allawi mourned the death of the former governor of the Central Bank of Iraq, Sinan Al-Shabibi.

Allawi said in a statement that “Nass” received a copy of it (January 9, 2022), that “with a sense of great loss, we heard yesterday about the death of Sinan Muhammad Reda al-Shabibi, who was one of the prominent Iraqi economists of his generation and graduated from the University of Baghdad and the University of Bristol in England, where he obtained his Ph.D. And he held several important positions in the Iraqi state, before he was forced to leave his country as a result of the repressive policies of the former regime that targeted his family.

He added, "In the diaspora, he worked for the United Nations in Geneva, where he was a senior economist in UNCTAD, where the deceased had a prominent role in the "Jubillee" campaign to relieve the debt burden of the world's poorest countries."

He continued, "After the overthrow of the Saddamist dictatorship, he returned to Iraq to head the Central Bank of Iraq and oversaw the currency reform process, which introduced the new Iraqi dinar, and had an active role in directing the Central Bank as a guardian of monetary policy, and Dr. Sinan used these powers wisely and effectively."

He also indicated that "Sinan worked closely with Adel Abdul-Mahdi, then Minister of Finance in the interim government of Iyad Allawi, to finalize the first phase of Iraq's massive debt under Saddam. This culminated in the largest debt restructuring in the world by Paris Club of Creditors.

Allawi pointed out that "when I was Minister of Finance in 2005-2006, we worked with Sinan to achieve economic stability, and complete the restructuring of Iraq's debts to include creditors from outside the Paris Club and commercial creditors. He was credited with maintaining negotiations to restructure Iraq's debt through three governments ".

He pointed out that "Sinan is a true patriot who combined technical proficiency with a pragmatic and responsible monetary policy. With his death, Iraq lost one of its prominent economic figures, and his loss will have a profound impact on the Iraqi economy."
