    Al-Nour News/ Follow-up
A press report sheds light on the sources of the Iraqi forces to strengthen the various defense systems.

The report, which was reported by "Erm News" on Defense News, which is interested in military affairs, says: "The Iraqi army is seeking to acquire several defense systems of different origins, including French Rafale fighters, drones and artillery, in addition to T-90 tanks. Russia, where some of the ongoing negotiations have reached an advanced stage.

Following is the text of the report:
Defense News quoted Norman Ricliffs, who leads the geopolitical advisory group NAMEA and was previously an advisor to the Iraqi Minister of Interior and Secretary-General of the Ministry of Defense, that "France offered Iraq 20 drones, and that the Iraqi Ministry of Defense is currently conducting technical analyzes of these aircraft."

An Iraqi delegation is scheduled to visit France in the near future to inspect the drones.

The website, which specializes in military affairs, quoted Ricliffs, who recently spoke to Iraqi defense officials about the procurement plans, as saying that there is still no contract for the drones. At this point, he believes that the delegation will “perform a quality check” on the unmanned systems.

The French Armed Forces Ministry did not respond to requests for comment on the visit, nor on the types or numbers of aircraft that might be displayed.

    French and Pakistani marches
In an interview conducted by the Iraqi News Agency, in January, with the commander of the Iraqi ground forces, he revealed negotiations to buy French drones.

Lieutenant-General Qassem al-Mohammadi said that "Iraq is negotiating many contracts, including armed drones that will be able to fly for 30 hours in Iraqi airspace, confront targets, and continuously monitor different areas with proven ability and effectiveness."

Ricliffs said Iraq is also engaged in negotiations over Pakistani drones. He added that Pakistan has also offered to sell 20 drones to Iraq, but the Ministry of Defense is still analyzing the offer.

In addition, al-Mohammadi said that there are plans to increase the number of tanks, divisions and brigades in order to enhance the capabilities of the Iraqi Army, which currently operates American Abrams tanks and Russian T-90 tanks.

Ricliffs indicated that the Iraqi Ministry of Defense is seeking to obtain additional T-90 tanks from Russia, after it ordered 73 tanks during 2016.

In June 2018, the Iraqi Ministry of Defense announced that as part of the first batch of order, 39 T-90 tanks had been delivered to the 9th Division, 35th Brigade. The ministry said that this brigade was equipped with M1 Abrams tanks, but was transferred to the 34th Brigade after delivery T 90.

"There are excellent artillery systems with high accuracy that will be imported from France, in addition to weapons systems equipped with night glasses," Al-Mohammadi said. He added, "We have many contracts signed by Iraq to purchase equipment, some of them have already arrived at the national port, and others are still in production."

Regarding local production, Al-Mohammadi spoke of “a serious desire to develop Iraqi weapons, and there are projects that have already been launched to enable us to manufacture systems ourselves.”

He added, "There is competition between East and West to prove the capabilities of their systems, and as armed forces we support diversifying the sources of armament."

    Rafale planes for oil
For its part, the Iraqi Air Force is seeking to acquire French Rafale combat aircraft.

The head of the Security and Defense Committee in the Iraqi parliament, Muhammad Rida Al-Haider, revealed in September 2021 that Iraq and Paris had signed a contract to purchase aircraft.

Ricliffs talked about the deal by saying that the Iraqi Air Force intends to buy 14 French Rafale combat aircraft at a cost of $240 million, and it will be paid with oil instead of cash.

He also said that the Air Force is close to purchasing a Super Mushak fighter/trainer, but did not provide further details.
