Iraq denies lifting the import ban on the tomato crop: the local product meets the market's need

The Iraqi Ministry of Agriculture denied lifting the ban on importing the tomato crop, pointing out that there is sufficient local production of the crop to meet the needs of the local market.
Ministry spokesman Hamid Al-Nayef said that "there is no decision to lift the import ban on the tomato crop currently," noting that "there is sufficient production of the locally produced tomato crop to meet the needs of the market."
He added, "The abundant production of the local tomato crop was reflected in its prices, as it decreased to 500 dinars per kilogram."
Al-Nayef indicated that “the ministry is still continuing to ban the import of 21 locally available agricultural materials, including eggs and chicken, which represent the food basket of the citizen,” noting that “the ministry relies on the agricultural calendar to ban the import of agricultural crops when they are available locally.”
The Turkish Aegean Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Exporters Association announced today, Thursday, that it is seeking to achieve exports of the tomato crop to Iraq at a value of 17 million dollars this year, after the ban on importing it in Iraq was lifted two days ago.
