The Iraqi parliament has set the twenty-sixth of March as the date for holding a session to elect the president of the republic
An Iraqi political alliance that includes the winning parties in the elections announced, on Wednesday, the names of its candidates for the post of President of the Republic and Prime Minister in the next government.
The head of the Sadrist Parliamentary bloc, Hassan al-Adari, said during a press conference held in Baghdad that "the coalition to save a homeland, the most numerous, announces the candidacy of Reber Ahmed for the presidency and Muhammad Jaafar Muhammad Baqir al-Sadr for the position of Prime Minister."
Al-Adhari added that their alliance "is proceeding with the formation of the government of the national majority," pledging to present a "clear and transparent government program that guarantees the prestige, dignity and independence of the people without outside interference."
Senior Sunni and Kurdish personalities attended the press conference, most notably Parliament Speaker Muhammad al-Halbousi. The “Save the Homeland” alliance includes the Sadrist bloc, the Kurdistan Democratic Party, and the Sunni Sovereignty Alliance led by al-Halbousi.
The Iraqi parliament had set the twenty-sixth of March as the date for holding a session to elect the president of the republic. Among the front-runners are the outgoing president and Patriotic Union of Kurdistan member Barham Salih, and Kurdistan Democratic Party member Riber Ahmed.
The sessions for electing the President of the Republic, which by convention requires that he be Kurdish, were postponed due to the lack of a quorum due to political differences, especially between the two most prominent Kurdish parties.
The political differences witnessed in the Iraqi arena in recent days reflected the extent of the division between the main parties in a country where major decisions are often taken by consensus and on the basis of behind-the-scenes negotiations.
On February 13, the Federal Court in Iraq, the highest judicial authority in the country, issued a decision to permanently exclude the candidate Hoshyar Zebari from the presidential race on the background of accusations of corruption.
Chaos has prevailed in Iraq's political life since the general elections held in October 2021, which witnessed the lowest turnout, and the ensuing threats, violence and delays in ratifying the results that lasted for several months.
The Council had failed to elect a new President of the Republic in the previous sessions, despite the expiry of the thirty-day period since its first session stipulated in the constitution.
The leader of the Sadrist movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, the first winner of the elections with 73 seats, reiterates his intention to form a “majority” government with the Kurds and Sunnis and to exclude powerful forces from the political arena, especially the “coordinating framework” that includes factions and parties loyal to Tehran.
Jaafar al-Sadr, a cousin of Muqtada al-Sadr and son of the founder of the Islamic Dawa Party in Iraq, Muhammad Baqir al-Sadr, has been Baghdad's ambassador to London since October 2019.
