Baghdad: «Middle East»
The election of the new Iraqi president, Latif Rashid, showed signs of more differences between the two main parties in the Kurdistan region, the Democratic Party and the Patriotic Union, as the two parties competed during the past hours to prove the victory of one over the other in the parliamentary vote, on Thursday.
A day after the election of the President of the Republic, the leader of the National Union, Bafel Talabani, said in a statement to reporters that he had managed to "break" the Democratic Party led by Massoud Barzani, after he ousted his presidential candidates, Hoshyar Zebari and Reber Ahmed. On the other hand, leaders in Barzani's party tried to confirm that their support for Rashid's candidacy came as part of a settlement that would topple a candidate who "does not represent the will of all Kurds", in reference to former President Barham Salih.
This came as Kurdish sources leaked information about Iranian interference throughout Wednesday to pressure the National Union to march on candidate Latif Rashid, knowing that the union was still divided over the "feasibility of continuing to support Saleh." Shiite political sources say that Nuri al-Maliki, the former prime minister and leader of the "State of Law" coalition, decided to overthrow the leader of the National Union by abandoning his candidate, Barham Salih. During the days preceding the session, al-Maliki’s circle reiterated that it was “unreasonable” for the “coordinating framework” (which includes Shiite factions opposed to the Sadrist movement and its leader Muqtada al-Sadr) to remain hostage to “battles to break the will” between the two Kurdish parties.
Al-Sadr's "disappearance" from the scene still raises speculation, amid anticipation of his position on electing the president of the republic and assigning Muhammad Shi'a al-Sudani, supported by his opponents, to head the next government. A Sadrist leader said, "The formula that was achieved on Thursday is the best in everyone's hands (...) the current project did not encounter conditions and factors for its success." It is known that al-Sadr had a large bloc in Parliament, but his Shiite opponents blocked the possibility of his current forming a new government, which prompted him and his deputies to request the resignation of Parliament, so his opponents took their place. There was information about a "settlement" that took place in the past hours between Al-Sadr on the one hand, and the "coordinating framework" and Iran, on the other, but it was not possible to verify it.
