An American official announced today, Sunday, that the United States is working to build an "integrated" infrastructure for air and sea defense in the Middle East at a time of escalating tensions with Iran, which is accused of launching attacks against ships in the Gulf waters.

The National Security Council coordinator for the Middle East and North Africa, Brett McGurk, said at the annual "Manama Dialogue" conference in Bahrain that his country is focused on deterring "imminent threats" in the strategic region rich in energy resources.

"The United States is now actively working to build an integrated air and sea defense architecture in this region," McGurk said, adding, "Something we've talked about for a long time is now being implemented through innovative partnerships and new technologies."

He was the commander of the US Central Command, GenMichael CorellaDuring the conference on Saturday, he announced that a US-led naval force would deploy more than 100 remotely piloted ships in the Gulf waters by next year to fend off maritime threats.

The attack is the latest in a series of disturbances in the Gulf waters, which are a major route for global energy supplies.

McGurk said US forces "detected and deterred imminent threats" from Iran, confirming earlier reports that the Islamic Republic was planning an attack on its regional rival Saudi Arabia.

He added, "Iran was preparing to launch an attack on Saudi Arabia. It is likely that this attack did not happen because of the close security cooperation between Saudi Arabia and the United States, which is ongoing."

At the same session, Israeli National Security Adviser Eyal Holata described Iran as "the most significant security threat toIsrael".
