    Shafaq News/ The Iraqi Minister of Justice, Khaled Shawani announced, on Thursday, the renegotiation of food contracts for prisoners in his ministry's prisons, revealing at the same time the establishment of a human rights institution and the Yazidi Survivors Affairs Department.
    Shawani said, during a speech at the forum for following up the implementation of the National Plan for Human Rights, which was held today in Baghdad, and was attended by the Shafaq News Agency correspondent, that the National Plan for Human Rights has developed a framework and distributed roles for all institutions, with the participation of civil society, to implement the recommendations of the review mechanism. The Universal League in its third round and the concluding remarks presented by the treaty mechanisms on the occasion of discussing Iraq's reports on human rights conventions before the United Nations committees and the League of Arab States, indicating that it is a simplified plan aimed at bringing together partners in a participatory and complementary process to protect and promote respect for human rights.



    He added that the Ministry of Justice, as the institutional body concerned with following up the implementation of the national plan and the implementation of Iraq's international obligations, finds that Iraq's active presence in international forums and the restoration of its international status stems mainly from the status of human rights internally with the existence of legislative and institutional mechanisms and policies to protect and promote human respect, explaining that the Ministry has created a department In particular, it is the Department of Human Rights as a partner in work and cooperation, which has moved rapidly towards taking its place in cooperation with the Department of Human Rights in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
    And he indicated that this department worked to establish mechanisms for cooperation between all institutional structures concerned with human rights to control the pace of work according to precisely set goals and within an appropriate timetable. 
    Shawani pointed out that considerations of human rights, combating torture, women's empowerment and social protection mechanisms in public life, stressing that the most important axes of the government program of the current government is serious in fighting corruption, as it is the most deadly impact on the foundations of human rights.
    He continued, saying that the Iraqi government, since its formation, has worked hard to confront these issues, whether through direct measures from the Council of Ministers, the President of the Council, or the ministers, and the results of those measures have begun to appear clearly, pledging that we will work to strengthen the status and role of institutional structures concerned with human rights in order to be an essential partner. in these government policies. 
    In terms of coordination with international organizations, Shawani explained that Iraq is working to ensure its sovereignty by cooperating with those organizations in accordance with the legal authorization granted to them and encourages them to exercise their constructive role in helping the Iraqi people in the relevant fields, noting that Iraq has received during the past weeks the United Nations Committee for Cases Enforced disappearance, he dealt with her professionally and gave her an opportunity to work independently. He also provided initial approvals for a number of private rapporteurs to visit the country in the next stage. 
    And he indicated that Iraq submits its reports to the United Nations committees periodically and at the appropriate dates after they are drafted by specialized committees, in which all information related to the effective implementation of the relevant international agreements is recorded. 
    In the field of establishing institutions, Shawani indicated that Iraq seeks to create specialized institutions to deal with issues related to the human rights file, as it established the Yazidi Survivors Affairs Department, and also strengthened the capabilities of existing institutions to carry out their tasks in the field of human rights, including those related to children, women, people with disabilities, and combating Poverty and others, as well as the High Commissioner for Human Rights.
    Iraq, Shawani says, is also working to fulfill the legislative requirements associated with international recommendations or convention obligations to ensure that legislation is in line with international standards, pointing out that both the government and parliament have put draft laws related to human rights at the top of the priority list while respecting the different points of view in this regard. the field.
    Shawani pointed out that the Ministry of Justice has begun its first practical steps in the field of devoting the principles of human rights, especially in correctional institutions, by starting to form committees to monitor the commitment of those in charge of correctional institutions, as well as other institutions, to the extent of human rights and their dealings with inmates. 
    He stressed that his ministry will not allow any violation and arbitrary measures against inmates, stressing that there are those convicted of crimes, but at the same time the law and international agreements protect their rights and we must protect them. 
    He noted that one of the basic rights enjoyed by prisoners is the provision of meals, and this issue was of interest to the public, especially in the previous period, explaining that we visited prisons and learned about the reality of the situation of prisoners, and based on the efforts of the Ministry of Justice and what was presented in the previous session of the Council of Ministers, the The President of the Council instructed the Ministry of Justice to renegotiate the food contract with the contracting company to improve the quality of meals provided to prisoners.
