Former Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi issued a 6-point statement in which he responded to a report published by the American newspaper “The Washington Post” regarding human rights violations that occurred during his tenure as prime minister of the Iraqi government.
Al-Kazemi said in a statement received by (Al-Oula News): “There have been recent conversations about violations that occurred during my period of service to the Iraqi people as Prime Minister, and I would like in this regard to mention the following, in addition to recent developments regarding the rise in the exchange rate of the dollar against the Iraqi dinar.”
1- We had paid great attention to caring for human rights, since the first years following the fall of the former regime; With our national responsibilities, we worked to prevent any violations, before, during and after investigations. We have put in place clear practical mechanisms for this purpose, taking advantage of our previous experiences in documenting the testimonies of victims of the former regime, in the Iraqi Memory Project, and other institutions concerned with human rights, with which we had the honor to work with during the days of the Iraqi opposition before 2003.
2- In 2020, we formed an anti-corruption committee (Diwani Order Committee No. 29 of 2020) in response to popular demands. The committee worked, formally, in accordance with judicial decisions. No arrest or arrest decision was issued without the order of the competent judge, and the same applies to all successive rulings. The committee has achieved success in curbing rampant corruption in state institutions, in accordance with applicable laws.
3- The committee was subject to continuous monitoring by the concerned oversight institutions, and the Public Prosecution issued a detailed report on it in 2021, which acknowledged its commitment to applying all international human rights standards stipulated in the Iraqi constitution. As for the allegation of violations, it requires significant legal evidence, and this is what was not available in this regard at all.
4- Likewise, there are talks about financial violations, which we officially disclosed in our time, and we were firm in preventing them, and we formed committees of inquiry regarding them, and all evidence, documents, and clues were presented to the concerned judicial authorities that issued their rulings against the corrupt and transgressors, and we hope to continue investigations and follow up the file to its end. Revealing the full truth to public opinion, local, regional and international, and returning all funds to their legal places.
5- With regard to the high exchange rate of the dollar against the dinar, while we affirm the need for cooperation between the public sector, state institutions, and the private sector and its ramifications, we reject the growing populist discourse, which lacks information and accurate facts, because it pushes the crisis to more complexity.
Protecting the citizen's sustenance and living stability requires all of us to shoulder the national, human and moral responsibility to improve work mechanisms and protect public interests. Therefore, we call on those concerned to maintain the stability of the exchange rate, reduce monetary chaos, control large financial withdrawals, reduce the level of inflation, and prevent any smuggling of hard currency out of Iraq.
Finally, we wish the current government to continue carrying out its duties and responsibilities, and for all organizations and institutions concerned with human rights and the honorable Iraqi citizen, to follow up on possible violations. We welcome the support of these projects to uncover the truth and fully lift the ambiguity of all related files.
Likewise, we stress the need to take the necessary measures to protect the various social strata and our national economy, away from bidding, flattery, and extortion.
