On Tuesday, Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shia al-Sudani received an official invitation from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to visit Turkey, and he promised to accept it.
This came in a statement issued by Al-Sudani's office, in which he disclosed a phone call the latter received from the Turkish president, indicating that the overall bilateral relations between the two neighboring countries were discussed.
According to the statement, the call witnessed a discussion of ways to develop economic cooperation, mutual efforts to control common borders, and coordination to pursue terrorist groups in the common borders between the two countries.
Erdogan renewed his invitation to the Prime Minister to an official visit to the Republic of Turkey, in addition to inviting him to attend the Antalya Diplomatic Forum, according to the statement.
The statement indicated that during the call, they discussed securing Iraq's share of the waters of the Tigris and Euphrates, the continuation of cooperation in the field of trade and investment, and the participation of Turkish companies in infrastructure and reconstruction projects in Iraq. The railway link between the port of Faw in Basra and Turkish territory was also discussed.
Earlier, the Turkish presidency said that Erdogan stressed, during his call to Al-Sudani, the need to “end” the presence of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) on Iraqi soil.
Erdogan indicated, according to the Turkish presidency's statement, that "Ankara attaches importance to the security and stability of Iraq and its territorial integrity, just like Turkey," stressing that "ending the presence of the PKK terrorist organization in Iraqi territory is a necessity for the national security interests of this country."
