Observers of Iraqi affairs believe that Russia wants to increase its influence in the region through the Iraqi scene, which is witnessing international crowding at this stage, stressing that Russia today is working to ensure that Iraq does not stand against it with regard to the alignments related to the Ukrainian crisis.
Strengthening relationships
Today, Monday, the President of the Republic, Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid, received at the Baghdad Palace, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his accompanying delegation. During the meeting, they discussed ways to enhance bilateral relations and prospects for cooperation between the two friendly countries, in addition to reviewing developments in regional and international events, as the President indicated the need to strengthen and develop relations in areas of a strategic and vital nature, and the importance of consolidating stability through peaceful solutions and constructive dialogue.
The President also touched on the importance of advancing economic cooperation between the two countries, pointing to the need for coordination and consultation on issues of common concern to enhance security and peace in the region and the world.
The President of the Republic praised Russia's positions in support of Iraq in its war against terrorism and its efforts to protect its security, and stressed in this context the depth of relations between the two countries.
He also pointed out that the Iraqis have suffered from wars and violence over the past decades, and currently the situation is safe and stable in all Iraqi cities, and there is welcome and support from the international community for the government in its endeavor to consolidate security and advance the service reality.
The President stressed that Iraq seeks to build balanced relations with all countries of the world in order to achieve common interests, pointing out that the government program encourages building bridges of cooperation and relations with everyone.
Peace options
In turn, Lavrov appreciated Iraq's position calling for dialogue, avoiding crises, and giving priority to peace options instead of wars.
The Russian minister also affirmed his country's support for Iraq, and its serious desire to strengthen relations between the two countries, and expand cooperation frameworks in the economic and military fields and rehabilitate infrastructure.
Today, Monday, the Iraqi Prime Minister, Muhammad Shia'a Al-Sudani, received the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Sergey Lavrov, and his accompanying delegation.
[rtl]Lavrov conveyed the greetings of Russian President Vladimir Putin to the Prime Minister, and Russia's desire to perpetuate and develop bilateral relations between the two countries in various fields. He also affirmed Russia's keenness on Iraq's security and stability, and praised Iraq's efforts in combating terrorism, and its pioneering role in easing tensions in the region.[/rtl]
During the meeting, the Prime Minister expressed Iraq's keenness to maintain relations with friends, and indicated that the government is moving in the field of foreign relations based on mutual interests and sustainable partnerships.
The meeting witnessed an emphasis on strengthening and continuing communication and information coordination between the two countries in the field of combating terrorism and extremism.
war talk
Iraqi Foreign Minister Fouad Hussein confirmed that Iraq's position on wars is clear, noting that there are historical relations with Russia.
Hussein said, in a joint press conference with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, "We welcome the visit of the Russian delegation to Baghdad, which is an important opportunity to see the point of view of the Russian side on various issues."
He added, "Iraq's position on wars is clear, so we call for a cease-fire in the Russian-Ukrainian war, and an end to the crisis through dialogue."
He continued, "In our discussions, we touched on issues of the region and bilateral relations, and we also studied how to deal with the financial dues of Russian companies in Iraq," stressing "the importance of the meeting of the joint committee between Iraq and Russia."
The minister explained that "Iraq has historical relations with Russia, and we have cooperation with it in the security and economic aspects."
For his part, Lavrov confirmed the approval of increasing fellowships for Iraqi students, pointing to the continuation of coordination with the Iraqi side regarding the Palestinian issue.
The Russian Foreign Minister said at the conference, "We discussed the bilateral relations between Baghdad and Moscow and the available investment opportunities, and we also increased scholarships for Iraqi students." Pointing out that "the joint committee between Iraq and Russia will hold its meetings in Baghdad."
He noted that "the Quartet Coordination Center has proven its effectiveness in eliminating terrorism," stressing "support for Iraq's position calling for peace between Russia and Ukraine."
Increase leverage
Political researcher Ali al-Baydar believes that "Russia felt the danger of Iraq storming the global energy market, especially with regard to the desire of European countries that import Russian gas to import gas from Iraq, so Moscow is trying to pull Iraq into the eastern camp, especially since there are Iraqi political parties close to it." Tehran is Russia's strategic ally.
According to Al-Baider, Russia is working to increase its influence in the region through the Iraqi scene, which is witnessing international turmoil at this stage in order to increase the influence of large countries in it, including Russia, which is working today to ensure that Iraq does not stand against it with regard to the alignments related to the Ukrainian crisis.
Al-Baydar noted that "Iraq at this stage should prefer its interests, and not stand by any party in order not to bear the consequences of that, especially since the Iraqi scene is witnessing clear turmoil, and it cannot bear any retaliatory reactions by the major actors in the global transformations."
With regard to the aspects of armament, Al-Baydar says, "Iraq today needs to diversify its sources of armament, especially since Russian weapons are less expensive than other Western weapons, and Russia today needs to export part of it to cover the expenses of the conflict on its western borders, and Iraq must invest in these offers to provide expenditures that are used in other areas.
Loaded with goals
In turn, political and economic researcher Nabil Jabbar Al-Ali said that Sergey Lavrov's visit to Baghdad comes loaded with a set of political and economic goals, and it is a visit to renew bilateral relations between Russia and Iraq after the latter chose his new government headed by Al-Sudani, which is the first official Russian visit of its kind since his inauguration as president. Ministers, with the exception of the phone call between Putin, the President and the Sudanese nearly two months ago.
Al-Ali adds, "The format of the Russian delegation accompanying the Russian Foreign Minister bears a clear economic hint, as the delegation included a wide group of investors and representatives of oil and gas companies. Therefore, it is indications that the visit may target Russian commercial and investment offers related to energy, oil and gas files."
He continued, "Certainly, the visit may not be devoid of Russian political goals represented in showing Russia its views on the conflict in Ukraine, and it is trying through the visit to win over international and regional parties to build common views on the conflict in Eastern Europe."
