    Lawmakers and congressional sources said that more than half a billion dollars in US security aid to Iraq may be on the way to stopping "for fear of Iran benefiting from it."

    House Republicans are considering plans to eliminate U.S. taxpayer assistance to Iraq — the fourth-largest recipient of U.S. security assistance — citing the country's growing alliance with Iran's proxy groups, which they say have integrated into almost every level of the Iraqi armed forces.

    These aid dollars have become a priority for the Biden administration as it tries to help Baghdad avoid economic collapse.

    Republican leaders say they are done with the decision to halt the increased aid after an Iraqi court last month issued an arrest warrant for former President Donald Trump, claiming that his 2020 decision to kill Iranian general Qassem Soleimani on Iraqi soil constituted a war crime.

    "Iraq, to ​​which we provide millions of dollars in taxpayer money in security assistance for a year, has charged President Trump with the alleged crime of removing Qassem Soleimani from the battlefield, and yet President Biden turns a blind eye," said Republican Representative Jim Banks, a member of the Armed Services Committee.     "The Biden administration is recklessly funding foreign bad actors and Congress needs to take a hard look at where our taxpayer money is going abroad," he continued.

    Those plans could pose a diplomatic problem for the Biden administration, which is scheduled to meet at the State Department on Thursday with a delegation from the Iraqi government. And any congressional effort to cut off the Iraqi government's aid pipeline would certainly be raised by the Biden administration at these meetings.

    US aid has become increasingly important to the Iraqi government as it grapples with a massive cash crunch and a deteriorating economy.

    "This renewed call for the arrest of former President Trump requires that Congress take a hard look at aid to Iraq," Republican Representative Joe Wilson told the Free Beacon.

    A senior congressional aide familiar with the discussions told the  Free Beacon newspaper that Republican leaders are "more willing than ever to cut aid to Iraq permanently."

    And with Republicans now in control of the House and its appropriations committees, Iraqi aid could end up being cut off.

    "It's hard to think of anything stupider than continuing to fund Iraq while their government supports terrorists and indicts our former president, and there was no intelligent justification for that assistance," said the senior congressional aide.
