Shafaq News/ The Iraqi Minister of Industry and Minerals, Khaled Battal Al-Najm, said on Wednesday that the country does not have iron ores suitable for production, and that the reliance is currently on the importer.
This came in a press conference held today on the sidelines of the opening of the continuous casting factory at the General Company for Steel Industries in the capital, Baghdad.
The minister said at the conference, “The iron industry is an essential industry for any economic development,” adding that Iraq does not have iron ores suitable for the iron industry, and the ores we have are in the Husseiniyat region in western Iraq, and their purity does not reach more than 30%, and we need To more than 60-70% for the production of sponge iron.
He added that the Ministry's plan in this field is to provide the raw material both in the construction sector (rebar) and other sectors, noting that "we focus on two points: the scrap we have and sustainable scrap in iron production."
