Today, Wednesday, many countries of the world celebrate the occasion of “Labor Day,” a holiday that workers earned with their “blood” about 140 years ago, and after all these years, workers in Iraq still often lack the rights that their counterparts went out for a century ago. And half were killed in the streets because of it.

Nearly 400,000 workers participated in it, protesting against working hours and demanding that they be limited to 8 hours only.

The strike was able to achieve good success and paralyzed the economic movement in the city, before the matter developed until the police opened fire on the demonstrators and killed a number of them. Then an unknown person threw a bomb in the middle of a police gathering, which led to the killing of 11 people, including 7 policemen, and many were arrested as a result. Of the workers' leaders, 4 of them were sentenced to death, and the others were sentenced to prison for varying periods, before it later became clear that the one who threw the bomb was the police themselves.

After the death of workers at the hands of the American army in what was known as the Pullman strike, US President Grover Cleveland sought reconciliation with the Labor Party, after which Labor Day was legislated six days later and declared an official holiday.

Out of 6 million workers, there are only 600,000 guaranteed workers, meaning they deserve a retirement salary, which means that their percentage is only 10%, and the remaining 90% have no future or guarantee.

In addition, there are about a million foreign workers competing with Iraqi workers and unemployed, while Iraqi workers suffer from the lack of clear vacations or rights to that, the lack of a minimum salary in the factories, companies, and institutions in which they work, the lack of a specific time, and sometimes their working hours extend for more than From 10 or 12 hours.

The lack of job progression and annual increases, there are no clear standards that determine the rights of the worker in the event that he suffers an injury at work that prevents him from working again, the absence of the supposed rights of his children and his family in the event that he dies suddenly, in contrast to the government employee whose children and family inherit his salary after his death.

There are dozens or hundreds of rights and privileges that are absent from workers and workers in the private sector, which in contrast are enjoyed by employees in the government public sector.
