Shafaq News/ The Parliamentary Oil and Gas Committee vowed, on Tuesday, to resort to the judiciary to stop the government’s decision to raise automobile fuel prices, noting that the current government raised the slogan “services” while its decision constitutes a burden on the citizen.

Committee member Alaa Al-Haidari told Shafaq News Agency, "We are surprised and express our reservations as members of the Parliamentary Oil and Gas Committee regarding the decision of the Iraqi Ministry of Oil to raise the prices of petroleum derivatives, specifically improved gasoline."

He pointed out that "there are statements by the Ministry of Oil to end the file of importing oil derivatives and Iraq's self-sufficiency in all oil derivatives. Therefore, there is a development in the work of oil refineries with the introduction of new units in the Karbala, Basra and Baiji refineries."

Al-Haidari stressed, "We, as members of the Oil and Parliamentary Committee, will take a decision within the House of Representatives or resort to the judiciary to stop this decision that was issued by the Council of Ministers at the suggestion of the Ministry of Oil, if the latter continues to raise the price of improved gasoline without retracting its decision."

He pointed out that "the Iraqi government raised the slogan of the services government by providing services to citizens, and raising the price of improved gasoline is a burden on the citizen, and there must be an opinion for the government to stop this decision."

Al-Haidari continued, "Today the Ministry of Oil implemented its decision to raise the price of improved gasoline, and tomorrow we may witness a rise in the price of regular gasoline if the situation continues like this without a response."

The Council of Ministers decided, on Tuesday, March 26, to raise automobile fuel prices by about 30% for improved gasoline, and by 25% for “super” quality.

The Council of Ministers voted during its regular session to raise automobile fuel prices starting next May.

The Council also voted to increase the price of improved gasoline from 650 dinars per liter to 850 dinars per liter, and premium gasoline from 1,000 dinars to 1,250 dinars per liter, starting next May 1.
