Shafaq News/ The Petroleum Products Distribution Company, one of the formations of the Iraqi Ministry of Oil, announced on Wednesday that the Council of Ministers’ decision regarding increasing gasoline prices had entered into force, despite the objection and reservations of the Parliamentary Energy Committee, and the Iraqi street’s rejection of the decision.
The company said in a statement, received by Shafaq News Agency, that the decision to return the prices of the improved gasoline product to 850 thousand dinars and super to 1,250 thousand dinars returned to what it was previously and entered into force as of the first day of May.
The company stated that prices are subject to quarterly review every three months and come to reduce the gap between the cost of the product and the sold price and according to the increase in the products of Iraqi refineries and the ambitious plans in this field for new refineries.
The company confirmed that the price of regular gasoline will remain at 450 dinars per liter, as well as that of automobile gas at 200 dinars per liter, at its current status without change.
Yesterday, Tuesday, the Parliamentary Oil and Gas Committee vowed to resort to the judiciary to stop the government’s decision to raise automobile fuel prices, and said that the current government raised the slogan of “services” while its decision constitutes a burden on the citizen.
Committee member Alaa Al-Haidari told Shafaq News Agency that the committee expresses its surprise and reservations about the decision.
The Council of Ministers decided, on Tuesday, March 26, to raise automobile fuel prices by about 30% for improved gasoline, and by 25% for “super” quality.
The decision sparked widespread anger in the street, especially from drivers, because of its economic repercussions that citizens believe will burden citizens, especially since “regular” gasoline is very poor.
Observers believe that the decision is a declaration of living and social class and a confirmation of the existence of large disparities between the population and the disappearance of the middle class.
