    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Today, Thursday (May 2, 2024), a member of the Parliamentary Agriculture and Water Committee, MP Thaer al-Jubouri, revealed the position of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on increasing water shares for Iraq.
Al-Jubouri said in an interview with "Baghdad Today", "The truth that must be paid attention to during the visit of Turkish President Erdogan to Baghdad a week ago is that he did not give clear approval to increase water quotas for Iraq," adding, "But it resulted in the formation of joint committees to look into the issue." Increasing Baghdad’s water shares, and we hope for the best from the negotiations currently underway to reduce the effects of drought and increase the shares of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.”
Al-Jubouri added, “The issue in general does not require the formation of special committees, since international law imposes a set of obligations on riparian countries to ensure fair and equitable shares,” noting, “But we hope for the best in the negotiations and anticipate with them an increase in water levels.”
He pointed out that "the water file is a top priority in Iraq after the suffering of recent years and the severe consequences of drought," praising "the role of the Ministry of Water Resources in reducing the scale of the disaster through a series of steps that have begun to bear fruit, especially regulating the flow of water, lining rivers and streams, and moving toward modern irrigation systems."
The Parliamentary Foreign Relations Committee announced on Wednesday (April 24, 2024) its position on the Iraqi government signing a number of memorandums of understanding with the Turkish side during the visit of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, while indicating that those responsible for this file will be hosted for scrutiny.
Committee member Mukhtar al-Musawi told “Baghdad Today” that “the memorandums of understanding that were signed between Iraq and Turkey are not only related to the water file, but rather are different memorandums related to all economic, security, investment and other levels, and they were not imposed on Iraq, but rather they came in accordance with interests.” Common and mutual between the two countries.
Al-Moussawi stated, "The entities and personalities responsible for these memorandums will be hosted to know all their precise details for the purpose of reviewing, scrutinizing and studying them well. We will also scrutinize the strategic agreement that was signed between Baghdad and Ankara, as we have not yet seen its precise details and the provisions it contains."
It is noteworthy that Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani received, on Monday (April 22, 2024), the President of the Turkish Republic, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who is visiting Iraq at the head of a high-level official delegation.
Al-Sudani and Erdogan held official bilateral discussions, as well as expanded discussions at the government and ministerial levels on both sides, to discuss water, economic and security files, the development road project and developments in the situation in the region, where a bilateral strategic framework agreement was signed aimed at expanding the partnership in the economic and trade fields, and exchanging experiences. And confronting common environmental and regional challenges.
