As part of the government's plan to activate lagging projects, the Ministry of Education announced the imminent completion of more than 550 schools. However, these ambitions may be postponed due to the scarcity of funds allocated in the federal budget.
The Minister of Education, Ibrahim al-Jubouri, said that these schools will contribute significantly to reducing overcrowding in classrooms, and ending double attendance in schools in Baghdad and the provinces, noting that the current year will be full of new educational projects that guarantee an educational process that meets the approved quality standards.
The educational sector suffers from unprecedented overcrowding, as a number of school buildings witness double and sometimes triple shifts, which casts a pessimistic shadow on the educational process. The lack of allocations was revealed to “Al-Sabah” by a member of the Parliamentary Education Committee, Salem Al-Anbuge, as he said that “the amounts allocated in the budget do not meet the ambition,” expecting that his committee will hold a meeting with the Finance Committee in this regard. Al-Anbuge added, "Most of the education allocations in the budget went to the operational side, and only 20 billion dinars were allocated to the investment side, including school buildings."
Al-Anbuge continued, "Iraq needs 10,000 schools," explaining that "if we want to create a generation that benefits from education, we have to provide a class that accommodates 20-25 students at most." Al-Anbuge stated that “the most basic requirements in schools are not available, including services, and there are many problems in the education file that need more attention from the government.”
For his part, the educational supervisor, Khudair Al-Mousawi, confirmed that the double and triple shifts negatively affect the students’ academic level.
Al-Moussawi told Al-Sabah: “The double and triple shifts reduce the hours of lessons, and the lesson turns into 35 minutes instead of 45, and the student studies 3 hours instead of 5 hours,” noting that “this time does not cover the scientific material or the prescribed curriculum, and it will not The student benefits from it.
Al-Moussawi, a professor of mathematics, added that “due to double shifts, there are no classroom or extra-curricular activities, because school buildings do not have amenities that provide comfort for students, not even services or playgrounds that most schools lack, in addition to the absence of a studio.” .
