The Iraqi government announced the disarmament of groups opposed to Iran and their transfer away from the border, as part of the implementation of a previous security agreement between the two countries and cooperation between the governments of Baghdad and Erbil.
A statement issued yesterday, Tuesday, by the government’s Supreme Committee responsible for implementing the agreement, clarified the evacuation of the offices of those anti-Iranian groups near the borders of the two countries, disarmament and transfer of them to places far from the borders, stressing that border security is a shared responsibility between the two countries, and that any possible dispute in the future will be based on the agreement.
The statement indicated that members of these groups will be considered refugees according to the controls of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, pointing out that Iraqi border forces will be permanently deployed in the region and the Iraqi flag will be raised over them.
For its part, the Iraqi News Agency reported that “the representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Hennis-Plasschaert, attended the meeting held in Erbil and Baghdad, and expressed full support for the Iraqi government in implementing the provisions of the agreement with the possibility of dealing with these groups, provided that they have a civilian status.”
A previous agreement
. The Iranian Foreign Ministry said in late August that Iran and Iraq had reached an agreement to disarm what it described as “armed terrorist groups” in the Iraqi Kurdistan region, transfer them to other places at a later time, and close their military headquarters, without the ministry specifying the places to which they would be transferred. To her these.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani confirmed at the time that “if the agreement is not implemented on time, we will fulfill our responsibilities towards the terrorist groups in Iraqi Kurdistan,” he said.
Tehran has repeatedly accused the Kurdistan region - which has autonomous rule in northern Iraq - of harboring what it considers terrorist groups involved in attacks against Iran, and the Revolutionary Guard has long targeted the bases of those groups.
