Mr. Fares Issa, Head of the Kurdistan Regional Government Representative in Baghdad, received in his private office on Saturday (9/23/2023) Mr. Ghulam Muhammad Ishaq, Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations/Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Affairs Coordinator.
At the beginning of the meeting, they talked about the United Nations program in Iraq, especially in the field of development, as well as its role in supporting humanitarian programs in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq in general.
In another aspect of the meeting, the file of the displaced and their voluntary return to their areas of origin was discussed, in addition to the Kurdistan Regional Government’s continued support for the displaced despite the difficulties they are experiencing on the financial side.
The head of the Kurdistan Regional Government’s representation in Baghdad confirmed that one of the priorities of Mr. Masrour Barzani’s government is to continue providing support and services to the displaced until they return to their areas voluntarily.
Issa stressed the implementation of the Sinjar Agreement signed between the federal governments and the Kurdistan Region and the provision of security and services as a basic step for the return of the displaced, noting that some parties are seeking to close the camps without addressing the reasons in order to score political gain.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the UN official praised the efforts of the regional government to provide support and assistance to millions of displaced people during the past years, extending his thanks to the head of the Kurdistan Regional Government’s representation for the clarifications he provided regarding the above two topics
