The Ministry of Agriculture confirmed today, Monday, the stability of the prices of vegetable crops and fertilizers and the decrease in the volume of imports as a result of government support headed by Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani, which contributed to achieving local abundance.
The Undersecretary of the Ministry, Mahdi Sahar Al-Jubouri, said, “The Ministry has been providing agricultural loans to ensure the sustainability and development of projects, especially since the agricultural sector needs large capital, to finance projects and support farmers, so there were several initiatives in the agricultural sector, including the agricultural initiative and the bank’s own resources initiative.” Agricultural.
He added, “Earlier, the payment of debts owed by farmers was postponed, and the Federal Budget Law for the three years 2023-2024-2025, Article 20 Fifth, included a text confirming the postponement of the payment of government debts owed by farmers and peasants for a period of 3 years for those wishing to postpone their loans, provided that Their loans do not exceed 300 million dinars and are interest-free.”
He added, "The above-mentioned decision came as government care and support for the agricultural sector, for the sake of the sustainability of agricultural projects, and not burdening farmers with the burden of paying dues, despite the importance of paying them to open the door to loans again."
He pointed out that "the government support that allowed the import of fertilizers to be opened to the private sector without import licenses, facilitated the entry of large quantities of fertilizers equal to the existing demand, in addition to the production of the General Company for Southern Fertilizers."
He continued: "Despite the significant expansion of cultivated areas, relying on modern irrigation systems in the rural areas, the prices of urea and DAP fertilizers are witnessing remarkable stability, as a result of the provision of large quantities of local fertilizers, in addition to fertilizers imported by private sector companies."
On the other hand, he stressed that "the prices of strategic agricultural crops such as wheat are stable, as it was decided during the last marketing season to be 850 thousand dinars per ton, and we expect the price to be the same for the current season. These are good prices to cover costs and achieve profits in selling or marketing the wheat crop to the Ministry of Commerce."
He stated, “Vegetable crops are also currently produced in large quantities, through open agriculture, in addition to protected agriculture, and their prices are stable and remunerative for farmers,” noting that “goods imported from outside the country have decreased during the recent period in the Allawi wholesale market for selling vegetables.” “As a result of the abundance of agricultural products of good quality thanks to government support, their prices cover production costs, generate a profit for the farmer, and are suitable in the local market.”
Al-Jubouri stressed, “The abundance of agricultural supplies at reasonable prices and the presence of a supply that covers existing consumer demand encouraged farmers to increase production and use modern production methods in growing vegetables or strategic crops such as wheat, barley, and yellow corn.”
