The United Nations called for an immediate end to the war between Israel and the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) for humanitarian reasons, after more than three-quarters of the members of the 193-member General Assembly supported this step, which the United States used its veto power against in the Council. Security a few days ago.

Washington does not have veto power in the General Assembly. 153 countries, including Iraq and Iran, supported the ceasefire resolution, and Israel, the United States, and eight other countries opposed it, while 23 countries abstained from voting, including Argentina, Ukraine, Germany, Uruguay, and Italy. General Assembly resolutions are not binding, but they have political weight and express a global view on the war.

With a majority of 153 members, 10 against, and 23 abstentions, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution calling for a humanitarian ceasefire, the immediate release of all hostages, and ensuring humanitarian access to Gaza.

This came during the tenth emergency special session of the General Assembly on: “Illegal Israeli actions in occupied East Jerusalem and the rest of the occupied Palestinian territory.”

The resolution, submitted by 21 Arab countries and supported by a large number of member states, calls for an immediate ceasefire on humanitarian grounds. It reiterates the General Assembly's call on all parties to comply with their obligations under international law - including international humanitarian law - especially with regard to the protection of civilians.

The resolution calls for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages and the guarantee of humanitarian access. The draft refers to the Secretary-General's letter to the President of the Security Council of 6 December under Article 99 of the United Nations Charter.

This comes at a time when the President of the United Nations General Assembly,Dennis Francis, announced in a statement that the General Assembly will resume, on Tuesday, its emergency session on the situation in Gaza, after the United States used its veto against a UN Security Council resolution, on Friday. , calls for a ceasefire for humanitarian reasons.

In a message shared by the President of the United Nations General Assembly, the representatives of Egypt and Mauritania called for a special meeting of the United Nations General Assembly to be held on Tuesday, “in their capacity as chairs of theArab Groupand the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Group.”

The representatives of Egypt and Mauritania called for the resumption of meetings based on UN General Assembly Resolution No. 377, “United for Peace,” which stipulates that the UN General Assembly can meet to make recommendations when the Security Council “fails to carry out its primary responsibility to act in a manner required to maintain international peace and security.”

“In the absence of a ceasefire, and in light of the ongoing serious violations of international law, including humanitarian and human rights law, and violations of relevant United Nations resolutions, the situation in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem, and in particular theIn theGaza Strip, it continues to deteriorate significantly.”

-The Palestinian and Israeli civilian population must be protected, in accordance with international humanitarian law.

    – Demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza for humanitarian reasons.

-Calling on parties to comply with international law, especially with regard to the protection of civilians. Egypt's representative to the United Nations added: "The ceasefire in Gaza is the only solution to save lives, and the continuation of the war in Gaza will drag the region into a comprehensive war." Egypt's representative to the United Nations noted: “The new Arab draft resolution calls for the protection of civilians, an end to genocide, and an immediate ceasefire in theGaza Strip. What is the international community waiting for until the targeting of civilians in theGaza Stripis stopped?" Egypt's representative to the United Nations confirmed:

It is worth noting that the Israeli occupation army has been waging a devastating war on Gaza since October 7, 2023, which, as of Tuesday evening, left 18,412 dead and 50,100 wounded, most of them children and women, and massive destruction of infrastructure and infrastructure. “An unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe,” according to official Palestinian sources.
