    Today, Thursday, the Information Agency publishes the text of the joint statement regarding the visit of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to Baghdad.
    The following is the text of the statement:
    Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani and Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sanchez, met in Baghdad on December 28, 2023.
    1. The two presidents affirmed the excellent state of bilateral relations between the Republic of Iraq and the Kingdom of Spain, based on the historical relations between the two countries and their peoples, and they agreed to Continue to work together and continue to deepen bilateral relations. They decided to start contacts in order to hold a new meeting for political consultations, in order to discuss matters of common interest.
    2. Relations between Iraq and Spain have broad potential for development, including the areas of defence, security, infrastructure, transportation and water management. The two presidents agreed to continue diversifying bilateral economic and trade relations by encouraging Spain’s participation in the reconstruction of Iraq and the modernization of its economy. They also agreed to hold a meeting of the committee Joint Economic and Trade Coordination Committee (JETCO) in Baghdad in 2024, in order to further strengthen bilateral economic relations.
    3. Spain actively contributes to international non-combat efforts to develop the capabilities of the Iraqi armed forces, both within the framework of the international coalition against ISIS (Operation Inherent Resolve) and in NATO’s efforts to defeat ISIS, and to build modern, well-prepared Iraqi armed forces and security institutions through the NATO mission in Iraq. (NMI), which Spain assumed command on May 24, 2023.
    Iraq is committed to ensuring that international forces carry out their tasks in peace and security, and confirms that these forces are present at the request of the Iraqi government and that their work benefits the Iraqi people and the international community.
    4. The two Presidents highlighted Spain’s efforts within the European Union, the G20 and the United Nations to promote effective multilateralism, solidarity and universal respect for human rights, implement the Sustainable Development Goals and empower women and youth on a global scale, promote peace, security and stability through dialogue, and defend an existing international order. On bases, economic support for developing countries and combating terrorism.
    5. The two presidents also agreed on the importance of the Baghdad Conference for Cooperation and Partnership (Baghdad Conference) as a diplomatic tool to prevent the escalation of violence in the region and as a framework for enhancing regional cooperation and conflict resolution. Spain appreciated the pivotal role of Iraqi efforts to facilitate the resumption of diplomatic relations between Iran and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
    6. Iraq and Spain welcome the United Nations Security Council resolution of 22 December 2023, which calls for the creation of conditions for a sustainable cessation of hostilities in Gaza, and both countries jointly call for an immediate ceasefire on humanitarian grounds, and the two Presidents believe it is necessary to provide A credible political perspective for ending the conflict on the basis of UN Security Council resolutions.
    7. Iraq and Spain agreed to continue working to achieve a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine in line with the principles of the United Nations Charter.
    8. The two Presidents agreed that the climate emergency poses a direct and existential threat to the global community and human livelihoods, which requires strong and ambitious action by all countries, and expressed their concern about the impact of drought, which has been exacerbated by climate change and its serious impacts on their territories, Iraq and Spain discussed possibilities to enhance their cooperation in bilateral projects related to water and sanitation, and Prime Minister Mr. Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani announced that Iraq will join the International Drought Alliance (IDRA), an initiative launched by Spain and Senegal at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27), Which responds to the urgent need to provide more coordinated, cooperative and effective global action to build resilience to drought at the global, regional, national and local levels, and aims to strengthen political action to support countries, cities and communities.
    9. The two Presidents agreed to develop their relations in the field of higher education and teaching of the Spanish language. Moreover, with regard to the promotion of the Spanish language, Spain shared its desire to activate the expansion of the Cervantes Institute in Baghdad, in order to launch a teacher training program.
    10. The two presidents agreed to strengthen bilateral relations in other areas of common interest, such as cooperation in matters of justice, anti-corruption, tourism, health, sports, historical heritage and culture. Ended / 25 hours
