    Economy News - Baghdad
Iraq ranked first in the Arab world and sixth in the world out of a total of 196 countries, as the country that wastes the most food in 2023, according to the American magazine Ceoworld.
The magazine stated, in a report, that “food waste is a global problem that has negative effects on the environment, societies, and economies of countries.”
According to the United Nations Environment Programme's Food Waste Index report, approximately 931 million tons of food are wasted each year, representing 8 to 10 percent of global carbon emissions associated with unconsumed food.
The report added, “The food waste index also revealed that about 17 percent of global food production is wasted, with households responsible for 61 percent of this food waste, followed by food services at 26 percent, and the retail industry at 13 percent.”
According to the report, per capita household food waste is the same in lower-middle-income countries, upper-middle-income countries, and high-income countries.
Nigeria came in first place globally, followed by Russia, then Greece, Bahrain, and Malta, while Iraq came in seventh place out of a total of 196 countries, with the per capita share of food waste reaching 120 kg, while the annual food waste amounted to 4.7 million tons, while it came at the bottom of the list. Slovenia and Romania are the countries that waste the least food.
According to the American magazine’s report, Iraq ranked first in the Arab world, followed by Saudi Arabia, then Lebanon, Yemen, Syria, Kuwait, Qatar, Jordan, Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia, and finally Libya.
